Why are People Taking a Break from Facebook?

Facebook is an online social media and social networking service company based in California. Mark Zuckerberg launched the website in February 2004. Facebook can be accessed from many devices with Internet connectivity like laptops, desktop computers, tablet computers, and smartphones. Mostly everyone has heard about Facebook. Facebook is free and straightforward and is a great way to keep in touch with the friends and family. Meet new people and express yourself.

But Facebook’s idea of connecting people has now taken a huge hit after Cambridge Analytica fiasco. According to to the data from pew research Center, things are getting worse for the social media platform. A number of users in the US with age of 18 and above are deleting the ”Facebook app” of their smartphones. According to the Report, 4 in 10 of those who have been surveyed have taken a break from the social network for ‘several weeks or more.’ Some of them responded by saying that they had deleted the mobile app entirely from their smartphones. Pew has found that the Republicans are no more likely than Democrats to have taken a break from the Facebook or deleted the app last year. The recent criticism is directed at Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms that over supposed ‘Censorship’ came well after the Pew survey was conducted. It may be a factor next time around.
  • #DeleteFacebook
A few months ago, #DeleteFacebook campaign was doing the rounds across many social media platforms. The Cambridge Analytica scandal had induced this movement as users on Platform did not have any more faith in platform’s ability to keep safe their data.
  • Changes made to the “Privacy Policy.”
After such harsh criticisms, Facebook has made changes to its privacy policy. Now it is allowed to users to Download the data the site had collected. It feels that Facebook is fighting a lost battle with its one-time loyal user base. The survey has also highlighted how many people have downloaded their personal data from the platform. About 9% of the users have downloaded their personal data from Facebook. These users are highly privacy-conscious. Approximately, 47% of the users have deleted the App after downloading their personal data. 79% of them have chosen to change their privacy settings.
