A proxy server is alternatively dubbed “proxy” and is also sometimes referred to as the “application-level gateway.” It is a computer or a software system that acts as a gateway between a local network and a larger-scale network such as the internet.
Proxy servers offer better performance and security. In several cases, they also can monitor employees’ use of outside resources. In short, a proxy server is a dedicated software system running on a computer that acts as one of the essential mediators between an endpoint device like a computer, and another server from which a client or user requests a service.
The proxy server is likely to exist in the same device as a firewall server, or it may be found on separate servers, which are used to forward request the firewall.

Or it can be useful if you want a new online identity from an IP standpoint. You can change your IP address on a Mac at any time through System Preferences using a proxy server. To do so, follow the steps mentioned below:
- Tap on the Apple logo on your Mac’s screen.
- Then select the System Preferences option.
- Tap on the Network icon.
- Now you will need to tap on your network type. You will find it in the left sidebar of the System Preferences window.
- Then you have to tap on the ADVANCED option.
- Now tap on the Proxies tab.

It is helpful for improving general security and also hiding the client’s application address.
- You will then see a Blank Field at the top of the System Preferences.
- You need to enter the IP address of the desired proxy server.
Note: If you are using a SOCKS proxy, you will need to navigate to the SOCKS proxy list at its website, then you will have to select a type 4 or type 5 IP address.
- Tap on the OK button, and then press Apply. Ultimately, you will be connected to the indicated proxy server.
